Home Run for Horton’s Kids at National Stadium
Wednesday night, National’s Stadium was awash with wide-eyed kids and anxious adults all eagerly waiting to take their turn at bat atop the verdant National’s baseball field. This rare, on-field fundraiser was held to benefit Horton’s Kids, a local non-profit that supports children in Ward 8 through services such as tutoring, mentoring, advocacy, and family support.
Two of the “At-Bat” committee members for the event were Georgetowners, Rokas Beresniovas, vice president of the GBA, and Janine Schoonover, GBA board member. The event was also sponsored by a very special honorary host committee—over 80 representatives from Congress. And, what baseball event would be complete without team mascot Screech and foam-headed president Teddy? These mascots were on hand to delight the crowd as they partook in traditional ballpark fare and bid on many one-of-a-kind items at the Silent Auction inside the President’s Club. Home Runs for Horton’s Kids is held each year to raise funds necessary to continue meeting Ward 8 community needs. This year, the event raised approximately $320,000.
